This year’s theme is “Makers.” I was inspired by my talented photographer, Young, who surprised me with his hidden skill as a ceramicist. Over the past year, he has created a series of over 80 slip-cast ceramic Darumas - all glazed in different colors, and they are gorgeous!
I got to thinking - it would be fun to shine a light on local creators and their crafts. Thanks to the invaluable connections within my circle of friends and family, I was introduced to an array of gifted artisans.
Sarah Chuck, an influencer and Cameron House alumna, introduced me to the ingenious knot master Windy Chien. My cousin, Erika Gee, curated art shows in San Francisco’s Chinatown and connected me with the interactive sculptor Bijun Liang. A client suggested I attend the West Coast Maker Faire, where I discovered a club whose members build Star Wars droids.
The creativity in the Bay Area is overwhelming and now viewable in this calendar!
This calendar features 14 remarkable makers - some pursue their craft as a hobby, others as a side-hustle, and a few as full-time artisans. Each month’s QR code directs you to my website, where I will spotlight the “Maker of the Month.” There, you can delve into their video stories and explore more of their work.
My biggest takeaway was that regardless of their chosen medium, each Maker wants to bring peace and joy to this world. In that spirit, may 2024 be a year of peace, joy, and self-discovery.
