The Berkeley shoreline is cleaner due to Jonathan Newman’s regular walks collecting trash. (he/him) He turns what washes up into found-object art – ranging from walking sticks made of pencils, collages of food wrappers, and colorful sculptures made of doll parts.
His adventures began during the pandemic when he would take walks along Brickyard Cove near University Avenue where Strawberry Creek meets the Bay. During the huge storms last year, debris flowed down from the creek, and he picked up thousands of fast food wrappers. "I would pick up 10 bags of trash a day. It would include golf balls, lacrosse balls, pickle balls, whiffle balls, baseballs, and tennis balls."
Thank you Jonathan for making the community cleaner AND creating such whimsical and thoughtful art!
