Meet the Maker - Bijun Liang

Bijun Liang

An interactive media and installation artist from Chinatown San Francisco, Bijun Liang (she/her) often designs inflatable sculptures.

Inspired by how Chinatown residents helped each other during the pandemic, the inflatable hand represents Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy who was granted 1000 hands to alleviate human suffering. Bijun reimagines the everyday to recognize the hidden "!" moments that are often ignored or forgotten.

A product and visual designer in San Francisco, Bijun Liang is passionate about emerging technologies, social good, and bridging diverse communities. Her works includes, Free Pigeon, a sculpture of inflatable pigeons, considering where birds will go during the proposed renovation of Portsmouth Square; and Omens in Chinatown, a crowd-sourced wishing well that combines traditional Chinese superstition, coin-throwing culture, and carnival games to address and empower the mental fortitude of women in Chinatown. Using a unique blend of playfulness, humor, and crowdsourcing, Liang puts the voices of the community at the forefront of the art she creates.
