The San Francisco Bay Area is blessed with many Chinese lion dance troupes, each shaped by its own talents, interests, and traditions. Kei Lun Martial Arts (KLMA) stands apart for three defining reasons: a deep commitment to traditional storytelling in lion dance, the inclusion of masked character performers, and a proud practice of producing and restoring much of its own equipment and costumes.
While many lion dance groups in the Bay Area shifted in the mid-1980s toward high-flying, acrobatic pole work performed by younger dancers, KLMA chose a different path. Its performers emphasize caiqing (plucking or seizing the greens), an older storytelling form of lion dance that requires puzzle-solving, knowledge of Chinese culture, martial arts skill, and the ability to weave a compelling narrative. KLMA’s use of traditional masked characters further deepens the emotional connection between the performance and the audience, enriching the story being told.
Masked characters have become increasingly rare in contemporary lion dance, yet they remain a hallmark of KLMA performances. These characters showcase members’ training in martial arts, improvisation, comedy, and cultural knowledge. Roles include the big-headed monk, the young monkey, the vivacious Liu Cui, the scholar, the hunter, and the little boy. Many of the masks and costumes are made in-house, a practice that continues to surprise and impress other lion dance groups.
KLMA also takes great pride in crafting, restoring, and maintaining its own equipment, props, and costumes. Members have restored numerous vintage pieces, including the oldest known dragon in the United States (circa 1880s) for a nationally touring museum exhibit. Their dedication to preservation has earned the trust of the community, and the group has become known for rescuing and restoring aging lions—earning them the affectionate nickname “the Lion Rescue Squad.”Kei Lun Martial Arts trains year-round in San Francisco’s Chinatown and welcomes new members.
