Raquel Makow is an Argentine-American dancer whose artistry is shaped by a rich blend of cultures, disciplines, and lived experience. Born in San Francisco to a New York–born mother and a father from Buenos Aires, she was immersed in the performing arts from a young age, training in ballet, jazz, and ballroom beginning at ten. At fifteen, she began competing in Latin Rhythm ballroom — the same year she took her first Argentine tango lesson at Salón Canning in Buenos Aires with her father and attended her first milonga at La Viruta, a moment that would quietly shape her future.
Raquel went on to build an international ballroom career, moving to Portugal at nineteen to partner with Nuno Moreira, becoming Portuguese National Champion and placing 3rd in the Under-21 category at the WDC World Championships in Paris (2010). She later performed throughout the U.S. and Canada with theatrical productions featuring cast members from Dancing with the Stars, while living and working in Europe and North America. At twenty-two, she made a pivotal shift, leaving the competitive ballroom world to move to Buenos Aires and fully devote herself to Argentine tango, training with legendary maestros and immersing herself in the city’s milonga culture.
In tango, Raquel found both artistic depth and personal transformation. She became a seven-time finalist at the Tango World Championships with partner Maxi Copello, placing 2nd in 2020 and 4th in 2021, and performed in Buenos Aires’ most prestigious theaters while touring internationally as a performer and teacher. Today, her work extends beyond technique to include themes of respect, self-worth, and healthy communication. In 2024, she premiered her solo tango-contemporary work La Apertura de los Ojos, a deeply personal reflection on resilience and healing. Now based in Lisbon with World Champion Sebastián Jiménez, Raquel continues to evolve her artistry, guided by authenticity, connection, and a profound devotion to tango.
