Gail “G-Funk” Burks (she/her) is a Bay Area-based performing artist and educator who hails from Chicago. A lover of dance who has studied multiple styles, Wh/aacking is one of her main specialties. She first found out about the dance through YouTube videos as a college student in St. Louis and quickly fell in love with what she saw. The striking arm motions, dramatic poses, and spirit of self-expression captivated her, and she spent hours in her dorm room trying to imitate the movements.
After graduating from college and moving to the Bay Area, one of the things that followed Gail was the desire to learn more about this West Coast dance style that was birthed in LA’s underground gay clubs. She eventually found a local community that hosted a variety of events and welcomed her with open arms. There were also opportunities to learn from various Wh/aacking pioneers and leaders whenever they would come into town. She dove headfirst into developing her craft and considers herself a “forever student” to this day. Since entering the Bay Area’s street dance scene in 2012, Gail has performed, battled, choreographed, and taught in the States and internationally along with placing in competitions such as Freestyle Session LA and Vancouver Street Dance Festival.
Her credits include Mix’d Ingrdnts, collaborating artist for Strike & Release (the Bay Area’s 1st All-Wh/aacking theater show), workshop instructor at UC Berkeley, featured choreographer for Bliss Dance Festival 2021, and many more. Outside of dance, she also works as a ServiceNow Developer/Engineer and is open to new roles!
