With a background in the fashion world, artist, designer and maker, Ciriaco Sayoc (he/him) creates sculptural works from wood to fabric. His version of Parols, a Filipino star lantern associated with Christmas, is inspired by the precolonial Philippine boats called balangay and the solihiya sunburst pattern commonly found in rattan furniture. His versions of different colors and sizes are illuminated by battery powered tea lights and can be purchased assembled or as a kit to assemble yourself.
Based in SOMA Pilipinas, San Francisco, California, Ciriaco is a creative collaborator helping tell stories through design and bespoke craftsmanship. He went to school for fashion, and made a career working as a designer for brands such as Levi’s and The North Face. In 2019, he established his own brand called Non Uniform Standard where he’s not only putting things together but also telling a unique story within it, using all types of materials. His work can be seen at Filipino American nonprofit Kultivate Labs living walls at Kapwa Gardens and the signage in Balay Kreative studios.
